About the Campaign

#NoMoreSilence is a campaign to raise awareness about state sanctioned sexual violence in Egypt and to advocate for survivors.

The Freedom Initiative and the Egyptian Front for Human Rights, documented: 655 incidents of sexual violence perpetrated against 544 people by security personnel in Egypt from 2015 to 2022.

The repercussions extend from the moment of arrest throughout detention and beyond, and impact not only detainees of all ages, background, and gender identity, but also their family members.

In the strength of those who spoke up in the face of repressive regimes and societal stigma, the campaign hopes to shed light on the widespread and systematic state use of sexual violence as a means to intimidate, harass and torture detainees and their loved ones.

About the Design

The #NoMoreSilence design depicts a teal awareness ribbon similar to the sexual assault awareness ribbon, but modified to honor the victims of state sanction sexual violence in Egyptian detention who bravely told us their stories.

With this design, we’re hoping to both capture the strength of those under a repressive regime who spoke up about their experiences and continue inspiring hope.

The Freedom Initiative

@thefreedomi

For many in Egypt, sexual violence at the state hands is a reality. Today, I’m sharing this design to raise awareness against the state sanctioned sexual violence that occurs against detainees and their families to coerce, harass and torture. Join me in honoring the strength of those who spoke out against
their treatment.
